History: Louisiana as a European settlement was founded by the French and it was initially colonized by the French during the 18th century. Robert de La a French explorer Salle sailed down the Mississippi River and claimed much of the interior of North America for France. Louisiana got its name from the king of France and it was Robert de La who called this land the Louisiana Territory after King Louis XIV(1643-1715).

 
Louisiana became a U.S. territory as a part of the historic Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and finally got Statehood on April 30, 1812.
